Insurance has to be in place if you are intending to practice as a complementary therapist. No matter what the therapy is, if you are going to work as a practitioner then you need to have the relevant cover.

If you work in a clinic, specifically if you own a clinic, then you should ensure that public liability cover is in place. You would also need to check that each of your practising therapists (should you be employing any) had insurance cover as well to cover themselves.

When selecting an insurance provider in respect of your therapy insurance, you will need to ask a few questions to ensure that you are getting the insurance cover you require.

For example, you would need to check that your insurance covered you anywhere in the country you are living in, and whether you would be covered if, for example, you went abroad on holiday and were asked to treat someone.

If you are appointing trainees to work from your clinic, you would also need to know if they would be covered under your insurance policy. Employers Liability cover needs to be in place if you own a clinic and employ people to work there.

If you become qualified in a different therapy from the one you started your insurance off with, then the new therapy is usually added to your existing insurance with no problems. There is sometimes a charge if the new therapy is considered to be a higher risk category than the original therapy.

Also, you will need to check on your insurance if you intend to provide therapy treatments at exhibitions etc. Most insurance policies will provide cover for complementary therapists working in a clinical environment or in a patient's own home. So make sure that you are fully aware of what cover you have before providing treatment in a public area or at an exhibition or event.

There are an increasing number of insurers offering insurance cover for complementary therapists. It really will be a matter of contacting a few and seeing which one offers you the cover you need for the best price!
