Seven Chakras: A series of energy centres located along the Spine

Picture of meditation

Seven Chakras : the Chakra System.Although it is widely believed there are seven chakras, there is also the school that says there are in fact eight (which includes the Thymus). The most popular belief though and most widely used practices believe that there are seven chakras. Cakras are a series of energy points that exist on the ethereal plane, rather than the physical plane, and that is why Western medicine has difficulity in believing in their existence - because they cannot be seen! In physical terms, the chakras are located on the spine, from the bottom to the top.

The chakras are spinning energy centres relating to the nervous system. Each chakra has a specific vibration that relates to one of the colours of the spectrum. See more about the chakra system and how it relates to the colours of the spectrum here The chakra absorbs that colour energy from the aura that surrounds the body, and then the other colours are distributed to their respective energy centres along the spine.

We learn about chakras from Sanskrit teachings from Tibet from over 2000 years ago. Although chakras are invisible to us, they are there on the etheric plane, and when working free from blockages, can bring health and wellness to our physical and mental bodies. Good health and vitality depends upon energy moving around the body freely. This means allowing our emotions to flow with ease, allowing ideas and creativity to flow through our bodies, living in the moment and not living in the past. The chakras need to be open to allow the energy to flow freely and when this happens we feel a sense of vitality in our physical and mental health. There are also Mudras, which are hand gestures, see mudras for the chakras for further information. A simple way to energise and balance the chakras is as follows:

  • imagine each chakra spinning and gradually increasing in size. Then visualise each chakra and its corresponding colour becoming brighter and brighter.

RED relates to the Base Chakra, which is located at the base of the spine. This centre deals with sexuality, passion and energy. It also relates to the adrenal glands and kidneys, the muscular system and blood. Our survival extinct is located here. Imagine the red energy spinning and becoming clearer and clearer. Then move up to the sacral chakra.

ORANGE relates to the sacral centre and is located just above the base, in the small of the back. It relates to the reproductive organs, stomach, colon, ovaries and testes, and to feelings of joy, freedom and movement. Orange is the colour for 'moving on'! This is also the centre where we hold guilt, and this chakra should be opened to remove any negative associations and anxieties. Imagine the spinning orange wheel becoming clearer and brighter. Then, move on up to the solar plexus chakra.

show me the 7 chakras YELLOW relates to the solar plexus chakra and this can be found in the middle of the back. It relates to our feelings of self-worth. Any issues surrounding self-worth will cause problems and blockages in this area. This centre is also connected to the pancreas, liver, gallbladder and spleen. The body system it represents is the digestive system and nervous system. Clearly visualise the spinning yellow wheel getting brighter and brighter. Then move up to the heart chakra.

GREEN relates to the heart chakra, and is located between the shoulder blades. The centre of love, harmony and balance. It also is connected to the circulatory system and parasympathetic nervous system. Again, imagine the spinning green wheel as you move on up to the thymus chakra.

(the thymus chakra is the one that is less often talked about when discussing chakras) TURQUOISE relates to the thymus chakra, and it is closely connected to the heart chakra, dealing with our feelings of love and creativity. Imagine a spinning circle of turquoise as you move on up to the throat chakra.

BLUE relates to the throat and the thyroid gland. It is connected to speaking the truth, creative expression and communication. It is connected to the respiratory system. The spinning light shines blue, and then move on up to the brow chakra.

INDIGO relates to the brow chakra. This is sometimes known as the third eye, and is connected to the pituitary gland, the master gland. It is linked to our higher self and visualisation, and also to our eyes, nose and ears and skeletal system. Imagine a spinning indigo disc and move on up to the Crown chakra.

VIOLET relates to the crown chakra and is connected to the pineal gland. It is connected to the central nervous system. It is also known as our spiritual doorway, through which we approach our connection with Spirit.

MAGENTA relates to the spirit. It relates to our spiritual self, connecting us to a power greater than ourselves - a Higher Power and is connected to the glands of the meridian system.

Although each chakra has its own colour vibration, it is affected by the colour energy of the chakra directly above and below it.

If there is an energy blockage in any of the chakras, then the body will start to manifest an illness. To correct this, we can use the colour vibration connected to the blocked chakra, to allow this energy centre to function properly again.

We can do this by applying colour in the form of light. For example we can flood the body with a coloured light, which is known as colour irradiation, or by using coloured silk, of the appropriate colour, or by directing a beam of light to a specific area to stimulate that chakra into moving freely again. This is known as chromatherapy.

However, it is also appropriate to use your fingers and apply pressure on the chakra and send colour energy mentally along the energy centres.

Concentrate on sending colour energy through your body to the affected chakra to help restore the colour energy balance in that area.

Also, using a coloured filter of the appropriate colour, shine a beam of light through it on to the affected area to bring about healing.

If we think healthy strong, positive thoughts, it will have an extremely beneficial effect on our health. More and more these days we are told of the effect between our state of mind and our state of health. If you are happy and healthy on the inside, with strong positive thoughts, this will have a real impact on your physical body.
