The saw palmetto berries have been used for many, many years as a sexual tonic and aphrodisiac and has therefore been used in the treatment of frigidity and impotence.
It is also used as an appetite stimulant.
Although not enough research has been done to see how saw palmetto can be used in the treatment of cancer, there have been some recent findings (1996 - University La Sapienza, Rome) to suggest that saw palmetto can inhibit the activity of a number of prostate cancers that are hormone-dependent.
Also, two substances, monolaurin and monomyristin have shown in tests to have a moderate effect on cancers such as pancreatic and kidney cells. Much more needs to be done therefore to see if further saw palmetto remedies are to be found.
As with all remedies, there are certain times when you should avoid taking/using it. For example, do not use saw palmetto if you are pregnant. However, no significant side effects have been reported from the use of saw palmetto either ingested via the berries or saw palmetto products. In the side effects that have been reported - they are few - and have been limited to gastrointestinal upsets.
There have been no reports to date of serious allergic reactions (such as anaphylactic shock).
