Anxiety Attack

Anxiety attacks affect more people than you could ever imagine. Yet most people will not admit to these feelings. Every day, millions of people are coping with anxiety, without ever letting other people know what they are going through. People you would never imagine to suffer include Sigmund Freud, Charles Darwin, Isaac Newton and Abraham Lincoln. Now, these were extremely successful and famous people - yet they experienced the crippling effects of anxiety and panic.

Anxiety disorder affects people in any walk of life. You might be rich, poor, working, unemployed, man, woman or child - this disorder does not discriminate and will affect anyone. No one is immune!

What are the symptoms of anxiety? If you are a sufferer of panic attacks then you are only too aware of how awful the symptoms of anxiety can be:

  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Feeling incredible fear without knowing what you are afraid of
  • Sweating
  • Shaking
  • Feelings of not being able to get enough breath

All of which sound pretty horrible. Sufferers can get one or two of these symptoms, or even all of them. It is an extremely terrifying experience to go through. I can remember, after losing my father very suddenly to a heart attack, having my first panic attack. I truly thought I was going to die. I sweated, I panicked, I couldn't breathe, my chest tightened, I had pains in my left arm (associated with heart attacks) and felt sick. I have to say that panic attacks are the most scary thing I have ever experienced.

As I say, many people suffer, but suffer in silence. Why do we not talk about it? Basically, people who have never suffered from anxiety attacks do not have a clue how bad they are! They have no idea of the fear they cause. If you try and explain, they might even look at you in disbelief and say 'well, what is it you are afraid of?' and then you feel very silly saying 'I don't know'! So we tend to keep it to ourselves.

Today, we live in a world that is permanently 'on guard'; we are looking at our television screens that have messages scrolling across the bottom warning us of alleged terror threats looming in our society; we are constantly being fed contradictory 'advice' on what is good for us and what is not; how on earth are we meant to function properly when our minds are being filled each and every minute with fear? Fear of what might happen if we eat too much salt; what might happen if we don't eat enough fibre; what might happen IF, IF, IF!!!

Perhaps this constant feeling of having to be on our guard is what is causing so many of us to experience feelings of fear and panic, and generalised anxiety attacks.

NB! An extremely effective way to combat anxiety is to learn how to laugh! Real, deep belly laughing! It is impossible to feel anxious and laugh at the same time. It is well known now that laughter is indeed the best medicine of all. Laughter reduces symptoms of tiredness, depression and anxiety. By laughing your way through problematic situations, you are teaching yourself how to see the humour in any situation, which will help keep you calm rather than become anxious and upset.
