What is Saw Palmetto? It is a dwarf palm that is to be found in Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi and South Carolina. It grows wild in all of these places, and is cultivated in South California. It can also be found in the West Indies. As it grows in the wild, it needs very little assistance to help it grow. It is a very hardy plant - and in some cases was impossible to remove - even proving resistant to fire!

For the Native Americans - who used only plant remedies - they were aware of its healing properties a long time ago. Saw Palmetto was used for:

  • painful urinating
  • Poor appetite

They took the berries both dried and fresh as a tonic. As long ago as the 1700s, these berries were used to treat inflammation of the prostate and impotence and to stimulate sexual activity in men.

The benefits of the berries was not just confirned to men, women too found the berries useful in the treatment of painful periods and infertility, and also to stimulate breast growth, and the production of milk in nursing mums

There is also evidence to show that the berries were used to treat bronchial problems, stimulate the appetite and as an anti-inflammatory.

The leaves and branches of the plant were used to make things like baskets and brushes.
