Healing Chi
'Vital essence' and 'energy' are used to describe chi, healing chi, we can say because this chi sustains and animates your entire living body.
Chi energy can be affected by blockages in the body. These energy blockages can be the result of short-term stress, and more often than not, the body is able to deal with this quite effectively. However, if the stress is long-term, then damage can be done to the transportation of the chi energy.
So how is this damage caused? Blockages can occur when the body is hurt such as broken bones, or even bruising. But also, the network can be disrupted by sitting in one position for long periods of time, and of course stress and tension. A properly cared-for chi transportation system, will provide you with an abundance of healing chi energy to sustain a fit and vitality-filled life.
The Chinese over the centuries have learned to direct chi in particular ways. For example, to prevent ageing and disease, or it could be encouraged to flow from one person to another and therefore could be used as a healing medium. This healing chi was also able to be used in martial arts and the exercise routines stimulated and channelled energy which became known as Chi Kung (meaning 'energy exercise'). This is actually the goal of Chi Kung - to clear the chi network of any blockages that would result in the chi energy being suppressed.
By the proper execution of these energy exercises used in Chi Kung, and of which Zhan Zhuang is just one aspect, we have the ability to create energy within ourselves - this is a secret of life.
There is a reference to Zhan Zhuang in the Lao Tzu classic of The Tao Teh Ching:
Standing alone and unchanging
One can observe every mystery
Present at every moment and ceaselessly continuing -
This is the gateway to indescribable marvels.
Zhan Zuang means 'standing still' like a tree, unmoving, but observing each and every thing and coming to understand all that is happening within you. Continue practice and you will feel change coming. Once you start you will never stop, you will just keep discovering more wonderful things in your life journey.
